Simple food

Hi there! I was just thinking about how to keep my weight down while still trying out new food. Food blogging can add to my waist if I’m not careful. In the end, I thought that if I posted once in three days instead of daily, maintaining the blog and my waist would be more manageable.

For today, it’s back to simple food again — spring roll and chee cheong fun.

The spring roll consists of steamed Chinese turnip (also known as sengkuang in Malay, bits of hard-boiled egg, chopped lettuce, cooked, deshelled and deveined prawns, bean sprouts, crushed peanuts, sweet and/or spicy chilli sauce, which are wrapped in popiah skin (made of wheat or rice flour). The list of ingredients is very long and varies and preparing them can be a very lengthy process as well. All are then rolled into a popiah skin and resemble a fat wrap which is then cut into bite-sized portions. This is one of the signature dishes of this outlet which had very humble beginnings as a family food stall that is now a successful chain of outlets selling local food. However, their food quality is different from store to store and this is something they need to be more consistent about.

Chee cheong fun is steamed rice noodle roll and is served with sesame oil, either sweet and/or spicy chilli sauce and generously sprinkled with sesame seeds.

Simple food, indeed!
